Matt shares the story of growing up in a volatile home where Christianity was present but the gospel was often misunderstood. He reflects on the friend whose bold witness first challenged his view of Jesus, the gradual work God used to draw him to faith and the unexpected path that eventually led him into pastoral ministry. Together, Matt and Dr. Evans explore how God uses every part of our story, even the painful parts, without wasting any of it. Matt also opens up about his battle with brain cancer and the two- to three-year prognosis he received after doctors discovered a tumor in 2009. That season moved his theology of suffering from something he taught to something he had to live, deepening his compassion for people in pain and teaching him to trust God when the outcome was uncertain. They also talk about ministry in a divided culture, the challenge of applying biblical truth to contemporary issues and the courage required to remain faithful to Scripture when doing so brings criticism. Looking ahead, Matt shares his hope for the next generation and his desire to see the church serve its communities and make itself fully available to whatever God wants to do.
